Thursday, July 1, 1915.
When I went to see Egon today – I was told that
there would be no leave today. – The Czechs,
those pigs, have once again behaved in such a manner
th.[at] everyone has been confined to the barracks. – Hopefully
these scoundrels will get their just punishment one day.
If only the weather were better – I fear
Egon will get quite sick in that pigsty.
That would be too awful. – Today I had news
from Farkas [1] – not the news I was hoping for –
I’ll write to him again today and tell him
of our plight in detail – perhaps – he’ll know
some advice for us.
It’s too wicked that the volunteers can’t at least
be quartered in regular barracks. Just why!
In a barn, surrounded by dirt,
That is not a dwelling for human beings.

If the weather were fine, it might even be
quite nice to spend a night in there – but under
these conditions – it is simply degrading. I
feel cold in my warm bed – how cold
must Egon be! – oh God – will this agony
ever end.
